New ICNIRP Limit Values for the Narda NBM-550 Broadband Meter

The NBM 550 Field Broadband Meter by Narda Safety Test Solutions is part of the NBM-500 series broadband meter family and produces accurate results for electromagnetic field strength measurements.

Two new safety guidelines have been added to the list of selectable limit value curves for the NBM-550:

  • ICNIRP 2020 Occupational
  • ICNIRP 2020 General Public

With broadband probes, the limit value curves can be used to convert the measured value into a percentage of the limit value. For this, the predominant frequency of the field strength must be known and entered in the device. This works in the same way in reverse for shaped probes.
All new limit value curves are already included in new deliveries of NBM-550 devices to ensure end-users are monitoring to the latest guidelines.

For any EMF devices currently already on the market, these can be updated easily by installing the PC software (NBM-TS Version 4.1.0). The latest version of NBM-TS, version 4.1.0, must be used to transfer the limit value curves to the device. The calibration factors for each probe are stored in the probe itself and automatically taken into account by the measuring set.

What are the Limit Values for Low and High Frequency

For human safety, basic limit values for current density (J) in milliamperes per square meter (mA/m2) for low frequencies and for the specific absorption rate (SAR) in Watts per kilogram (W/kg) for high frequencies have been specified by international agreement.
The field strengths recommended by the ICNIRP (International Commission for Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) are recognised internationally and are used as the basis for the national standards and laws in many countries.

How to Update the Narda-550

The latest version of the Narda-550 Firmware can be downloaded from the Narda-STS website. The NBM-TS is the PC software for all instruments in the NBM-500 product range.
